Lingoo is a community website, dedicated to improving language learning for children and teenagers. We accomplish this primarily by facilitating language exchange holidays, or establishing connections for parents to pay for their child to stay with a host family in a foreign country. Lingoo allows parents to get in contact with like-minded families, who have children of the same age, and who have the same interests and values.

Hosting foreign children on paid-for language stays is a great way to supplement an income. But with whole host families discovering a fresh outlook on life, the fringe benefits are proving even better. This summer, Jane Davies’ 15-year old daughter will be staying with a Spanish girl and her family in Spain. It’s her first overseas trip without her family. It’s a big step but the Spanish girl stayed with Jane and her family in their Wiltshire home last summer on a paid-for stay to improve her English. While enjoying the experience, the girls became great friends.

How times have changed. Most Europeans who were on a language exchange to Britain before the 1990s have horror stories to tell. Inferior food served in a separate room to the host family is a quite common tale. So too are icy bedrooms with a ban on heating. But those days, thankfully, are long gone. Paid-for stays in a British home today are all about creating a positive, homely, educational holiday for the visitor.
