Teach from home
Many language students are looking for opportunities to stay in the home of a teacher. It’s an intensive, effective way to immerse themselves in the language and culture. As a homestay teacher, you provide meals and accommodation alongside formal or informal lessons to help students accelerate their language acquisition. So you also need to hold a professional qualification to teach your own language, or another language, to non-native speakers.
• Work flexibly and at a time that suits you
• Set your own rates
• Select your students
• Develop your own cultural immersion activities
• Control the content of your lessons and courses.
Your work can be as varied as you like. Choose to host teenagers preparing for exams, professionals improving business language skills, children learning for school, tourists brushing up on a language; the choice is yours. Read our simple checklist to help you decide.
And the Lingoo team is here to help support you on the way with advice and tips. Read our guide to money, tax and other important issues for host families and teachers.

Homestay teachers use their language teaching qualifications to teach in their own home. It’s a freelance opportunity. That makes it highly flexible. Some work from home all the time while others are full-time schoolteachers who offer homestays during school holidays. All homestay teachers control who they teach, when, and for how long. They also control how much they charge, the curriculum, and the activities and facilities they provide. You can read about the real-life experiences of our homestay teachers in our blog.
It’s an unrivalled opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the local language and culture. The student and teacher spend time together – in formal or informal lesson settings and during normal daily activities – so the student practices the language, builds confidence, and absorbs the local culture. The teacher provides meals and accommodation as well as social and sightseeing activities to enrich the learning process.
Lingoo homestay teachers are in demand. Once your completed profile is listed on our site, guests will be able to view it and contact you. It covers most of the things a student or parent needs to know about you, so think of it as your ‘shop window’. If you receive an enquiry you would like to pursue, both parties begin discussing the stay using our secure messaging system before a booking is made. When your guest makes a reservation, a small deposit is paid to Lingoo to secure the booking. Registering as a homestay teacher is FREE but subject to validation. You can find out more about how homestays work.
We encourage all our homestay teachers to share their interests, lifestyle and even their religion on their profile page. This enables guests to match their interests with yours so you both get the most out of the homestay. These can range from sporting and hobby interests to the food your family enjoys. It’s a simple, inclusive way to involve guests and improve learning. Read more about what kind of interests some of our homestay teachers offer.
Guests need to know they will be staying in a safe and secure environment on a Lingoo language homestay. Since 2007, we have been using a stringent validation process for members; no one can actively use our site without first being validated by a human being. We physically check each member’s profile and members must supply a current identification document and proof of address. For added security, we allow members to create a credentials file (available to members on request). Our hosts are then evaluated by visitors with feedback left on their Lingoo profile.
We also protect your personal information on our secure servers in an encrypted form and our secure messaging system maintains your privacy during communication with other members. Any financial transactions through Lingoo are also safeguarded through enhanced security. Read more about security on Lingoo
