A recent opinion piece in the British newspaper the Daily Telegraph described the attitude of the United Kingdom towards the learning of foreign languages as “can’t, won’t, don’t”. While there are many talented linguists within the United Kingdom, the article highlights the fact that there is a growing skills shortage within the country that seems to be increasing as the number of people receiving school-based language qualifications falls.

The ability to communicate with and trade with foreign countries is an important factor in the global economy. In the United Kingdom, there is a fear that a lack of language ability is creating a skills shortage that could negatively impact on the competitiveness and success of the economy. It is estimated that 75% of people in the United Kingdom cannot speak a foreign language. This lack of language diversity makes it harder for businesses to market and sell their products overseas.

When communicating within a business environment the need to be understood quickly and concisely is important, particularly if the two parties have different native languages. Whether speaking the language yourself or using a translator, errors in understanding or context can have a drastic impact on the result of the conversation, particularly on building a relationship or negotiating a deal.

Understanding the culture and customs of the native speakers of a language is an important part of the language learning process. By immersing oneself in and understanding the culture and the way in which a language is spoken by native users, students are able to connect theoretical teaching with real-world situations. This gives learning a context in use, and allows the student to pick up slang and real life experience. For those unable to go on a Lingoo homestay vacation or language exchange there are options for practising their language skills closer to home.
