5 Tips and Tricks for Learning a Language Faster

Learning a language means tackling four elements: reading, writing, listening and speaking. These are linked to other aspects like vocabulary and grammar. It can be a lot to take in, and may seem overwhelming at first. However, once you hit upon a specific rhythm of learning, you’ll pick things up pretty fast.

Here at Lingoo we want to get everyone learning a new language, in the most effective way possible. Take a look through our list of top 5 tips and tricks for learning a language faster. We guarantee they’ll help you achieve fluency in no time at all.

 1. Brush Up On Your Cognates

Essentially, cognates are words from your native language that mean the same in the language you want to learn. As Tim Ferriss explains:

“With language learning you always know at least some words before you ever begin. Starting a language “from scratch” is essentially impossible because of the vast amount of words you know already through cognates.”

The Romance languages, like Spanish, French and Italian have borrowed many words from each other. Even Asiatic language like Japanese and Persian have integrated English words and other European words.

 2. Think in Your Target Language

As strange as it may sound, thinking in your target language and avoiding translations really does help you to learn a lot faster. By totally immersing yourself, your brain deciphers the language more quickly, building fluency rather than simply enhancing translation skills.

 3. Get to Know a Native Speaker

Textbooks and YouTube videos are both good tools for learning a new language. But nothing beats a native speaker. They can help you with pronunciation and accents, and even keep you motivated. A native speaker can also teach you the nuances and idioms of your target language.

 4. Learn the Most Frequently Used Words First

It is said that by learning the most frequently used words of a language first means that you will be able to understand, at a minimum, 60 to 70% of a text. Rather than following a traditional, formal path of learning greetings and simple conversations, collect as much information on the most popular words of your target language. The process will flow much more naturally, and will grant you a quicker understanding.

 5. Watch, Listen, Read and Write

One of the easiest ways to improve language fluency is to watch, listen, read and write something in your target language every day. Even if it’s just for half an hour or fifteen minutes, tactical immersion makes learning a part of your daily routine. That way, the language won’t slip out of your mind.
