Can Mobile Apps Help You Learn a Language?

The development of digital technology has impacted upon every aspect of modern life. This includes the way in which we learn languages, with lots of developments in the industry coming in the last decade. From instant translation software to language learning apps, entrepreneurs, techs and educators are constantly trying to develop new ways for language learners to use technology.

The most widely known software is Google Translate, which, whilst limited, gives users access to hundreds of different languages to make basic translations or interpretations. Despite the fact that the software is not yet advanced enough for business use, it has saved many a holidaymaker trying to communicate in a simple way. Mobile apps have been developed with the purpose of helping people learn new languages.

These language learning apps - which are designed to digitalise the language learning experience - have had a wide range of levels of success. These apps work in a number of different ways. One of the most publicised is Duolingo. An app which drip feeds vocabulary and reinforces learning through exercises, which could include tasks such as translating sentences. The Duolingo app is popular with more than 70m users. However, whilst it builds vocabulary, it has some limitations.

Whilst vocabulary is an important part of language learning it is just one part: Duolingo does not have the ability to empower users to practise language skills verbally or in a practical environment. This knowledge development can be of use in the language learning process, but because of its limitations it cannot be the sole driver or mechanism of learning. These limitations and the value of face-to-face teaching and cultural immersion mean that we are unlikely to see traditional teaching completely overtaken by digital technology. Mobile apps like Duolingo can have a place in the learning experience. However, it can only ever be a supplement rather than a substitution.
